Komatsu Europe has expanded its range of medium-sized machines with the launch of a new Stage V-compliant wheeled excavator.

The Komatsu PW98MR-11 excavator weighs 10.7 t and is fitted with the manufacturer’s own three-cylinder diesel engine, which provides 50.6 kW of net power.

Said to offer 10% lower fuel consumption, the model is also deemed to be 5% more productive than its smaller sister model; the PW98MR-10.

Primarily designed for simple excavation and heavy duty lifting tasks on construction sites in urban areas, the excavator has creep, low and high speed modes and can travel at a maximum of 30 km/h.

According to the manufacturer, the model’s 4-wheel steering and compact size means that operators can use the PW98MR-11 for work in “narrow alleys, road construction sites and for sewer construction work”.

Komatsu, which recently also launched its K100 system for demolition excavators, said, “Its swing boom design allows digging parallel to buildings or barriers, and the protected two piece boom cylinder grants safer truck loading operation.

“When working on slippery and uneven surfaces the standard 100% differential lock on both axles will grant direct traction, for enhanced mobility on any jobsite.”

While the outside of the new excavator is decorated with Komatsu’s new MR-11 livery, the inside of the cab offers construction equipment operators proportional joysticks, integrated attachment control and a dashboard interface.

The PW98MR-11 excavator, which is available with the company’s factory-fitted Lehnhoff Powertilt option, joins the PW98MR-10 and PW118MR-11 models in Komatsu’s midi-size excavator range.

Speaking of the new excavator, Alex Visentin, Komatsu’s product manager for compact wheeled excavators, said: “The operator can concentrate on the work in front of the machine and worry less about rear swing impact in confined areas; this makes the machine exceptionally versatile, with the lowest running cost in its class, without the expenses of an SCR system.”

He added: “On the European market today, no other manufacturer can guarantee such a unique combination”.
