Waste specialist to ‘restore’ Israel landfill site

Waste management and construction company M.Eylon Aviv Nechasim has installed a new wet processing recycling unit from CDE Global at a former landfill site in Israel.

The 105 ha (260 acre) site, located north of Jerusalem on the Netanya coastline, is to be restored for future residential development.

Eylon commissioned the new M2500 modular wash plant to process the 400,000 t of waste contained in the landfill. 

The company said that while it would have been simpler to redistribute the material to other landfill sites, the installation of new equipment offered “both commercial and environmental advantages”.

Orin Binyamin, company engineer at M.Eylon Aviv Nechasim, said: “When we secured the contract to excavate the site for the land to be reinstated for development, we were keen to identify a long-term solution as opposed to a temporary fix.

“It would be counterproductive to reinstate this site by trucking vast quantities of contaminated soil and other waste material from one landfill to another – a process which produces a double disadvantage due to significant operational costs and resulting carbon emissions.

Positive change
“We also saw an opportunity,” she adds. “We could take up a leading role in this space, driving positive change and demonstrating, in partnership with CDE, the potential and value to be unlocked from contaminated soil.”

Eylon’s new M2500 modular wash plant features CDE’s AquaCycle water management system and integrated feeding, screening, sand washing, and stockpiling capabilities.

Built on a single chassis, the plant can handle up to 70 t of material an hour. It will be used to process the landfill’s contaminated soils, which contain heavy metals and other contaminants, with uncontaminated material being restored to the land.

The M2500 wash plant can handle up to 70 tonnes of material an hour.

According to CDE, the plant is currently producing around 50tph of washed 0-2 mm sand, oversize aggregate, and filter cake. 

Matt Bunting, CDE’s business development director, said: “It’s a unique project in that the material to be processed is not destined for landfill, but rather has already been landfilled.

Commercial value
“We engineer solutions designed to divert material from landfill and that is a major focus of ours but an equally important next step – one that we’re taking with the customer – is deploying our technology to existing landfill sites to minimise the material already disposed of to recover construction products that have huge commercial value and can be returned to good use in the sector.”
