One of Yanmar Compact Equipment’s zero tailswing midi-excavators has won a Good Design Award prize from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion.
Designed for civil engineering applications in urban environments, the ViO80-7 tracked excavator belongs to the 8-tonne class, but is said to offer the functionality of a mini excavator.
The Good Design Award was given in recognition of its “tailored design”, which enables it to operate in narrow spaces and still offer “advanced functionality” for applications such as digging trenches.
“Its high-power Yanmar engine and advanced ViPPS2i hydraulic system combine to offer a 15% improvement in excavation speed,” said the manufacturer, comparing the model to its predecessor, the ViO80-1B.
The ViO80-7, which was also given the highest rating in fuel efficiency standards certified by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, also includes a double-lock quick hitch function that allows attachments to be replaced using controls operated from the driver’s seat.
The ViO80-7 was further praised for combining user-friendliness and efficiency.
“The multifunctional Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and simple operating system enable efficient work and ensure safety,” said the Japan Institute’s judging committee. “They not only reduce the workload but also enhance operator satisfaction.”
Commenting on the excavator’s engine systems, the committee added: “Meeting top-tier fuel efficiency standards and featuring low-noise technology, it achieves optimal performance for urban civil engineering tasks.”
