The 2023 World Demolition Awards

The year’s World Demolition Awards winners were revealed at a gala dinner and ceremony, hosted by television star Rory O’Shea.

D&Ri wishes to express its congratulations to all the companies that won an award, and to the many, many more companies from around the world that submitted entries for the 2023 awards.

While all of this year’s entries, from contractors and OEMs alike, showcased the industry at its best, with many of the projects submitted demonstrating the industry’s commitment to safety, the environment and technical innovation,...the winners of the 2023 World Demolition Awards are:

Award 1 - Best Contract of the Year under US$1 million

🏆 P. Olesen A/S - for the demolition of a heavy coal crane and hopper in 48 hours at Avedøre Power Station

The judges said: “This was a straightforward crane dismantling job until you factor in the 48-hour time window. Then it became very impressive.”

Award 2 - Best Contract of the Year over US$1 million

🏆 Thompsons of Prudhoe - for the demolition of the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Plant at the Redcar Steelworks

The judges said: “Thompsons captured all the metrics on a challenging project requiring comprehensive planning, analysis, communication and execution.”

Award 3 - Best Urban Demolition of the Year

🏆 Trifecta Services Company - for its work on the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Parking Garage

The judges said: “With the site surrounded by an active hospital, this project required extreme dust control and vibration measures.”

Award 4 - Best Civils Demolition of the Year

🏆 Max Wild GmbH - for the demolition of the 1.33 km long Neckartal Crossing

The judges said: “A great effort by Max Wild, professionally executed and using many demolition technologies.”

Award 5 - Best Industrial Demolition of the Year

🏆 Manafort Brothers, Inc. - for its work on the Belco Asset Retirement Obligation Project to remove four historic diesel generating units

The judges said: “A great job, which had the added complexity of working on an overseas island.”

Award 6 - Innovation: Plant and Equipment

🏆 Despe and Caterpillar, joint winners for the development of the Cat 6015B Jumbo Demolition machine.

The judges said: “Those of us who have been in the industry for a long time know Despe is not just a demolition company. And Caterpillar is well known for innovation, with the 352 Straight Boom providing the latest example.”

Award 7 - Innovation: Tools and Attachments

🏆 Rotar, for the RCC45 Concrete Cutter

The judges said: “Rotar has provided a leap in innovation by integrating Ramplifier and OilQuick technology into this quality attachment.”

Award 8 - Safety and Training

🏆 Despe - for its onsite safety precautions on the  demolition of a former pharmaceutical production facility

The judges said: “Clean work and a clean workstation are guarantees of safety.”

Award 9 - Recycling and Environmental

🏆 Colemans - for asbestos removal, structural demolition and site clearance of an industrial complex

The judges said: “Colemans achieved a very high level of re-use along with a focus on reducing carbon dioxide.”

Award 10 - Best Explosive Demolition of the Year

🏆 Controlled Demolition, Inc. - for its work on Louisiana Chemical Dismantling Company’s energy facility contract

The judges said: “A clean and neat job on many different structures. Exemplary work.”

Award 11 - Best Collaboration in Demolition

🏆 Independence Excavating, Inc. - for the Forward Innovation Center project

The judges said: “Only a collaborative effort to combine resources and project management could have achieved this project.”

Award 12 - New Entrant Award

🏆 Target Contractors, for its project submitted in the Contract of the Year valued at over US$1 million

The judges said: “This project featured an 11-storey building, involved 13 government agencies, and required the abatement of lots of asbestos containing material.”

Award 13 - Best Demolition Contractor of the Year Overall

🏆 Colemans, for its project in the Recycling and Environmental category

The judges said: “This project featured a large crew, committed to carbon neutral, with incredible planning, focused on using alternative energy to reduce emissions.”
