Industrial and Civils - it’s the Erith and Mainline show
08 November 2021
Erith Contractors taking home an award has not yet acquired the same inevitability as death and taxes, but there is no question the British company has been one of the most consistent entrants to the event in recent years.
The Tilbury Grain Store project came about when Erith provided emergency response and immediate making safe works to the Port of London Tilbury after an explosion in 2020.
The effects of the explosion made the remaining silos structurally unstable, so Erith removed the grain from the silos before taking them down to slab level.
All works were carried out under DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explposive Atmospheres) Regulations 2002.
Collecting the award on Erith’s behalf was David Sinclair from Safedem USA, who had earlier chaired one of the conference sessions of the WDS. The award was presented by Tony den Hoed of the summit’s headline sponsor Volvo Construction Equipment.
The judges said: “Erith once again showed their immense talent in maintaining the highest best practice standards to meet the urgent needs of this project.”
Mainline Demolition and its client the Georgiou Group had won the Civils category at Dublin in 2018, and the same pair combined to take the award in Chicago.
Mainline described the Windsor Heritage Bridge as its biggest challenge in the 40 years it has been operating in the industry, with extensive and variable structural deterioration, flood scoured riverbed levels, Covid-19 lockdowns and tidal river waters all adding to its complexity.
Despite this, Mainline completed the project safely, on time and within budget, with no lost time incidents.
Peter Lam of gold sponsor Steelwrist stepped forward to present the award, which was collected on the winner’s behalf by Joe Brinkmann, managing director of the South African contractor and multiple previous award winner Jet Demolition.
While that was happening, Mainline could reflect on the judges’ summary of their entry, which was that the company had “developed bespoke solutions to successfully deliver a challenging and environmentally sensitive solution.”
