Caterpillar applies clean sheet to new loaders – Part 2
06 November 2024
Part 2 of this two-part article looks at the new undercarriage featured in the larger compact track loaders, as well as a new advanced technology package available on all models.
Caterpillar’s next-generation skid-steer loader (SSL) and compact track loader (CTL) models feature a redesigned engine compartment that places the engine and cooling package lower into the frame for improved stability. And while the 255 and 265 CTLs retain a torsion axle suspension undercarriage, the four latest models – the 275, 275 XE, 285 and 285 XE – feature a new E-bar (equalizer bar) undercarriage designed to deliver even greater stability enhancement.
This hybrid system, which is based in the company’s long heritage with track-type tractors, combines the advantages of a rigid-style undercarriage suited for lifting heavy loads or using heavy attachments with those of an oscillating undercarriage for traversing uneven terrain or obstacles.
Designed for heavy work
According to Chase, the E-bar undercarriage has a pivot shaft in the rear that allows for some movement, with the equalizer bar in the front that moves on a center. “This is not welded to the chassis of the machine, so you’re getting that undercarriage to still move somewhat independent of the chassis,” he explained.
The ride is admittedly not the same as a torsion axle suspension. “But remember, you’re in a bigger machine doing heavier work. You need it to be stronger and a little bit stiffer,” Chase pointed out. “You get a little bit better ride improvement with it because it is not a rigid frame, but you get fantastic material retention. And [you also] get to enjoy more track life.”
The design objective was for the machine to feel “planted” as it is lifting heavy loads higher or as it is grading, Menon said.
“A big part of being comfortable is for the machine to do what you’re expecting it to do, and for it to be stable,” he commented. “So, this equalizer bar undercarriage system was our way of trying to be able to provide both the comfort and the stability and performance that these machines can deliver.”
Advanced technology package
Attachment operation on all next-gen models is integrated into the joysticks, with the machine automatically recognizing the type of attachment and the required joystick pattern for controlling it. A new optional technology package makes such attachment use even more intuitive.
“We have a new advanced technology package that has advanced joysticks coupled with a new advanced touchscreen monitor,” said Morgan Timiney, product consultant – SSL/CTL, Caterpillar. “That advanced touchscreen monitor and joysticks give you a lot of functionality when running those more complicated work tools, like a cold planer.”
The advanced joysticks enable integrated control of the touchscreen monitor, so all machine function control and adjustments can be made without the operator removing their hands from the controls.
“These tools and these joysticks are going to make operators that are new to the industry more effective from the start. The learning curve will be [faster] and shorter than it has been in the past,” Timiney stated.
“Everything with the creature comforts that we have in the cab, the way our controls are intuitively laid out, the buttons on the joystick, are designed for the machine to just do what you expect it to do,” Menon stated. “And all the technology, all the engine performance, all the increased capability with hydraulics, those all just work in the background, enabling a customer or an operator – whether they’re skilled or they’re brand new starting off – to get the full benefit of the machine.”
The next-generation Cat SSL and CTL models will be available in 2025.
