All West Demolition brings in Mammoet

Canadian demolition firm All West Demolition commissioned heavy lift and transportation specialist Mammoet to assist with the demolition of the six-storey Bank of Montreal building in downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The old bank building is being demolished in order to make way for construction of what will be the tallest building in Edmonton, comprising mainly of housing units.

According to Mammoet it was essential that the demolition work was carried out in a confined area in order to minimise disturbance in the city centre. Initially All West Demolition requested that Mammoet’s Liebherr LTM 1500 wheeled mobile telescopic crane carry out the work. After careful analysis, however, Mammoet proposed a slightly smaller crane: the LTM 1400, also from Liebherr which, it said, proved to be the most efficient and cost-effective option for the job.

Mammoet started the demolition process by removing the 12.5 US ton (11 tonne) roof trusses. From here the floors were taken down section by section. The teams rigged up the beams for removal, each weighing up to 32 tons (29 tonnes). Mammoet said it safely and successfully completed all required lifts, while minimising disturbance to the traffic flow and neighbouring areas.
