Jack is an 86-year-old Plant Operator working for the demolition division of United Kingdom-based civil engineering company HWM Group.

Jack, who has been driving heavy plant machinery for an impressive 65 years, is currently working on HWM sites across Hampshire, Surrey, Dorset and beyond. He likes to be on-site early and is keen to get going as soon as site is open. Jack says he enjoys the early starts and all without the need for an alarm clock.

Over the years, Jack has worked for numerous employers including Clancy Plant, RMC Plant and Blaze Construction before joining HWM.

Last month, Jack completed his Health and Safety knowledge assessment to renew his CSCS Green Card. He also passed his ‘Client Specific Fit to Work Medical’ examination that is required by HWM Group’s Top Tier clients.

Jack did retire for about a week in his sixties, but driving plant machinery is where his heart is. He’s currently driving a Kobelco SK300LC excavator working at HWM Group alongside his son, Paul, who is also a Plant Operator.

HWM Group Director, Adam Blake, says, “We love having Jack and his son Paul on the HWM team. Jack more than pulls his weight. His ability to do the job and his reliability as an employee are second to none. He’s a real team asset and we can always count on Jack to get the job done.”

How long should a hard hat last? A hard hat is such a ubiquitous item of personal protective equipment (PPE) in construction that it has become emblematic of safety in the industry.
