Contractor to provide deconstruction services for the Science Park and Research Campus Kips Bay (SPARC Kips Bay) project.
Skanska has signed a contract with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to provide preconstruction and deconstruction services for the Science Park and Research Campus Kips Bay (SPARC Kips Bay) project in New York City.
The contract, valued at US$59 million (approximately SEK650 million), is included in Skanska’s US order bookings for the first quarter of 2025.
As part of the agreement, Skanska will undertake preconstruction services and the deconstruction of existing buildings on the CUNY Hunter College Brookdale campus, where phase one of the SPARC project is set to take place.
According to Skanska, the first phase will involve the creation of over 55,700 sq m (600,000 sq ft) of educational facilities for the City University of New York (CUNY) and New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). The plans also include the development of a central public open space, known as SPARC Square, and the construction of an ADA-compliant pedestrian bridge on 25th Street, spanning the FDR Drive.
Preconstruction work began in late 2024, with groundbreaking for the project expected by the end of 2025. Deconstruction of existing campus buildings is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027.
This project adds to Skanska’s portfolio of significant infrastructure and development projects in the United States. Recently, Skanska has been involved in several major projects, including:
South Brooklyn Marine Terminal Upgrade - In April 2024, Skanska signed a final award worth $612 million to upgrade the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Brooklyn, New York. The project involves demolishing existing buildings, dredging berths, upgrading bulkheads, and installing new wharf and dock facilities to support offshore wind farm projects.
Portage Bay Bridge Replacement - In April 2024, Skanska secured a $1.4 billion deal with the Washington State Department of Transportation to replace the aging Portage Bay Bridge in Seattle. The project aims to construct a seismically resilient structure to improve safety and infrastructure longevity.
MetLife Stadium Renovations - In February 2024, Skanska began renovations on the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The project includes demolishing sections of pre-existing seating and installing a new modular steel composite seating system to meet FIFA requirements.
