Peab announces SEK 1.5 billion contract on Gothenburg’s West Link

As was announced in February, Sweden-based contractor Peab has signed on for the West Link railway project, which will service Gothenburg, Sweden, and the surrounding locality. The newest scope of work is estimated at SEK 1.5 billion (US$138 million).

Commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration, the company said it will be working on the Haga-Rosenlund section of the scheme, which seeks to build new rail lines and revamp rail transportation in the country’s second-largest metro area.

“Haga-Rosenlund is an important hub in Gothenburg’s public transport network and the station will contribute to increased accessibility in the area,” said Berth Larsson, Peab region manager.

The Haga work is divided into five contracts, Peab said: one installation contract and four construction agreements.

“Peab has now been awarded the first construction contract, Rosenlund, which is one of Sweden’s most challenging civil engineering projects,” said the company. “The assignment means that Peab will build part of the underground commuter train station over a distance of about 250m (820 ft).”

The construction contract had an immediate start date, and the project is expected to be complete in 2029.

The firm added that city density aspect of the scheme will present challenges.

“The construction contract is located in the middle of the core of Haga and great consideration must be given to the surroundings,” said Peab.

The underground train station will have three entrances built in several platforms, with four tracks, and two mezzanine levels – one with space for a bicycle garage and another that terminates at the Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law.
