One of Malaysia’s biggest football stadiums to be demolished

The Shah Alam Stadium, which took four years to build, was opened in 1994 as the home of the Selangor Red Giants Football Club.

While the 80,000-seat capacity stadium remains the biggest football and athletics venue in Selangor State, in recent years it has fallen into disrepair due to a lack of maintenance.

Just yesterday infrastructure developer Malaysia Resources Corporation (MRCB) and Menteri Besar Selangor Inc (MBI) - the body responsible for Selangor State Government asset administration and investment - signed a Memorandum of Understanding to redevelop the 760,000-sq m site, with the demolition phase alone slated to cost around RM35 million (US$7.35 million).

In a joint statement the companies confirmed that pre-demolition works - including the installation of hoardings, would be finished within the next three months.

Comprises six levels and a semi-enclosed structure, works to dismantle the structure will be carried out by MCRB subsidiary Lembaran Prospek. Dismantling of the stadium structure is set to begin this coming June, with the works expected to be completed by mid-2025.

Witnessing the signing of the MoU, Amirudin Shari, Chief Minister of Selangor State, said: “MBI and MRCB will comply fully with the requirements of local authorities to control demolition works that may result in air, noise and vibration pollution in the surrounding area.”

While the political leader confirmed that an explosive demolition event had already been ruled out, he said that further details of demolition “measures will be communicated to relevant parties throughout the demolition period”.

The new Shah Alam Sports Complex will incorporate sports and youth facilities, a theatre and a recreational park. The last phase of construction, due to run from 2028 to 2029, will see the addition of an integrated transport hub and a hotel.
