Denmark gets its first robotic sorting plant for C&D waste

The facility aims to improve recycling rates and contribute to Denmark’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of C&D waste. The construction sector is responsible for nearly 40% of the country’s total waste output.

Solum’s facility features a robotic sorting system supplied by ZenRobotics, capable of processing 25,000 tonnes of waste annually.

Using advanced sensor technology, the system sorts materials into recyclable fractions, such as wood, plastic, metal, and concrete, achieving a material purity of up to 90%. This contrasts sharply with manual methods, which previously achieved a recycling efficiency of around 10%.

Christian B. S. Christensen, CEO of Solum, said: “This facility is a milestone not only for Solum but for Denmark’s broader vision of sustainability. Solum has always embraced innovation, and today we are ushering in a new era for construction waste management.”

The facility’s robotic system, which is also equipped with AI technology, continuously learns and adapts to emerging waste management challenges, such as new material types.

During a demonstration at the inauguration, attendees observed the robot sorting materials with high precision, including identifying paint on wood to separate uncontaminated wood for recycling. The recovered wood can be repurposed into products like chipboard for furniture, reducing the need for new raw materials.
